Welcome to a floral celebration of the April birth flower and its meanings.
There are birth month flowers for every month of the year – in the same way that each month has a birthstone. Birth month flowers are usually in season during their specific month. This means they should be easy to find in florists and mixed bouquets. It also makes them perfect for a really thoughtful gift, or just a treat for yourself.
If your birthday is in April, or if you’d like to buy a personalised gift for a loved one with a April birthday, read on to find about more about the April birth flower and it’s symbolism.

April birth flower: Daisies
Don’t just think of daisies as the small-flowered weeds that spring up in the lawn. There are lots of daisy varieties with much larger flowers, such as Oxeye daisies and Gerberas, and these are the ones you will find in florists.

The word ‘daisy’ originates from Anglo Saxon, translated as ‘day’s eye’ due to the flower’s habit of opening at dawn.
The daisy symbolises innocence and purity, as well as the intention to keep a secret. The Gerbera daisy has a particular meaning of cheerfulness; I’ve always thought of daisies as cheerful flowers now I come to think about it!

April birth flower: Sweet Peas
A bunch of freshly-picked sweet peas in a vase on the table is hard to beat. Sweet peas aren’t often found in shop-bought bouquets, but they’re really easy to grow yourself and an ideal seed for kids to plant.
Sweet peas symbolise pleasure and bliss, as well as a farewell following a good time. I think they fit the ‘token gift to say thanks’ role very well.

If you’d like to grow sweet peas for cutting, you can do this in a garden bed or a container. They’re climbing plants so you’ll need to provide them with support; garden canes are the easiest way to do this. Once your sweet peas start to flower, cutting a few blooms regularly will encourage the plant to produce more flowers. Just a couple of plants can provide you with wonderfully-scented flowers that you can enjoy indoors all summer long.

Exploring each month’s birth flowers is a great way to discover more about flowers in general, and learning about their meanings is a fun way to see them from a new perspective. You might not always agree with those meanings of course, but they can certainly get you thinking!
