Do you know what the March birth flower is?
Just like birthstones, there are birth month flowers for every month of the year. Birth month flowers are usually in season during their specific month, so they should be easy to find in florists and mixed bouquets – making them perfect for a really thoughtful gift, or just a treat for yourself.
If your birthday is in March, or if you’d like to buy a personalised gift for a loved one with a March birthday, read on to find about more about the March birth flower and it’s symbolism.

March birth flower: Daffodils
Daffodils are probably the most iconic flower of spring. It’s no wonder they’re a March birth flower, is it?
Daffodils symbolise regard and chivalry, as well as unrequited love.

Daffodils are an easy flower to grow in your garden. As well as providing a cheery shot of colour in spring, you can use them as cut flowers indoors. My bulb planting guide shows you how and when to plant daffodils. You might also like to take a look at this video on how to grow them in pots:
If you’re going to give daffodils as a gift, go for a bunch, as this symbolises joy and happiness. A single flower foretells misfortune – not a great birthday message!

March birth flower: Jonquils
You’d be forgiven for thinking this is the same as a daffodil at first glance. While both flowers belong to the Narcissus group, Jonquils have some different features. Their leaves are more slender, their stems are shorter, and they tend to have clusters of flowers on the stems. They also have more fragrance.
Jonquils symbolise a desire for affection to be returned, as well as sympathy. It’s probably not worth mentioning the sympathy bit if the recipient isn’t keen on getting older 😉

The March birth flowers are so intrinsically linked to spring that’s it’s not hard to see why they represent this month, is it? My birthday is in March, so I’ll definitely be using daffodils to bring a little bit of the outdoors into my home this month. How about you?

I had no idea that there was even such a thing as birth flowers! I guess I have even more reason to love red roses now aha 😉
Thanks Catherine
I didn’t realise there were birth flowers either until recently – which is how I ended up writing this series! Roses are hard to beat aren’t they 🙂
