Do you know what the October birth flower is?
Just like birthstones, there are birth month flowers for every month of the year. Birth month flowers are usually in season during their specific month, so they should be easy to find in florists and mixed bouquets – making them perfect for a really thoughtful gift, or just a treat for yourself!
If your birthday is in October, or if you’d like to buy a personalised gift for a loved one with an October birthday, read on to find about more about the October birth flower and it’s symbolism.
October birth flower: Marigold
Bold and colourful, marigolds aren’t exactly the shyest of flowers. Their name is said to derive from “Mary’s Gold”, linking to the early Christian practice of placing an offering of flowers instead of coins on Mary’s altar.
Marigolds represent strong feelings of love and passion. They also symbolise desire for riches, cruelty, grief and jealousy. Probably worth considering if you’re giving them as a gift!
October birth flower: Cosmos
I tend to think of cosmos as a summer flower, but a quick glance around the garden at this time of year has made me realise that they’re a real star in early autumn too.
Cosmos looks wonderful as part of an informal bunch of blooms from the garden. It’s also really easy to grow, and a great option for seed sowing with children.
Cosmos represents order, peace and serenity – a really reassuring flower compared to marigolds then!
Once again we have two very contrasting choices for this month’s flowers – passion versus order, jealousy versus serenity. I don’t think I’ll see marigolds the same way from now on!
