Tips for feeding garden birds in winter

November 30, 2018 by Catherine Leave a Comment

Are you providing food for the wild birds who visit your garden this winter?

We usually spend less time in our gardens during winter, but wild birds are often still visiting just as much as in the warmer months.  Garden birds will be searching for food, and also water when temperatures drop low enough to freeze their usual supplies.

Providing a winter food source for wild birds is a great way to support your local wildlife, and you’ll also benefit from the added interest in the garden at a time when not much else is going on.

You can buy a wide variety of bird food to keep your garden visitors happy, and it can be a bit daunting working out the right option for different species.  To make your job easier, check out this great infographic from Trago.  It includes a helpful guide to the best types of food for common UK bird species, as well as suggestions for the best place to put the food so that your garden visitors can reach it easily.

So many great ideas for providing a variety of food for your garden birds!  We’ve got lots of robins and blue tits paying us a visit at the moment, so I’m going to make sure we put plenty of food out on the bird table and in hanging feeders.  I think we need to get busy making some of our homemade bird feeders too.

What are your tips for encouraging birds to visit your garden in winter?
