My pick of the best natural Christmas wreaths

Have you put up your Christmas decorations yet?  We did ours last weekend and it’s one of my favourite parts of the season, I love making the house feel so celebratory.  I like to extend the decorations to the outside of the house a little bit as well, to create a really festive welcome as soon as you step onto the drive.  The main decoration I use for this is a lovely fresh Christmas wreath, hanging in pride of place on the front door.

I think it’s hard to beat natural Christmas wreaths, incorporating fresh foliage, flowers or fruit.  They give visual impact, texture and even scent in a way that artificial wreaths just can’t deliver.  I’ve been thoroughly enjoying myself browsing the internet for options this Christmas, and thought I’d share my top picks with you.

A rustic take on the traditional fir wreath, I really like this wreath’s open, informal shape – it would look fantastic on a cottage door.  There’s a lot going on here – Noble Fir, pine cones, dried oranges, cinammon sticks, crab apples, eucalyptus and dogwood – so this wreath will really make an impact. At 50cm it’s big too, making it great value for money.

If you like your Christmas wreaths without the greenery this is a great option.  I really like the use of unusual components like red peppers and limes, I doubt you’d see something similar on your neighbours’ doors.  With all those dried fruits plus cinnamon scent I bet this one smells amazing.

Now this is something a little different.  The centre of this woven star wreath is planted with three red Sempervivums and decorated with cones and berries.  I love the fact that you can re-pot the plants after Christmas and continue to enjoy them in the garden.

What a way to blow the budget!  I absolutely love the way this wreath manages to be both simple and shamelessly decedent.  The use of misteltoe is a cheeky touch, and the shiny baubles contrast wonderfully with the soft textures of the ribbon and foliage.  I can see this very much at home on a smart black urban door.
