5 simple ways to unwind in a busy home
Collaborative post
Life in a family home can feel like never-ending chaos at times. And while you might enjoy the busy atmosphere, it’s also important to ensure you’re able to find a moment of peace now and then. This might seem impossible, but the good news is that no matter how hectic things get, there are always small, simple ways to pause and unwind, even in a busy home.
With that in mind, here are five easy ways to sneak some well-deserved ‘me time’ into a busy day.

Online games
Sometimes all you need to really decompress is a few quiet minutes and something to occupy your mind, which is why online games can be a good option. They’re simple, satisfying, and perfect for a quick and easy mental escape.
Spider solitaire is a great example of an online game that will help you relax. This is a true classic game, so you won’t need to spend time learning how to play. It’s also a solo game, so you don’t have to wait for anyone else to be around either (and when you’re looking for ways to unwind in a busy home, being alone is often a good start!). You can play on your phone, tablet, or laptop, meaning you can switch off for a few minutes whenever it works for you.

Create a relaxation nook
No matter how busy your home is, carving out a little corner just for yourself can be a fantastic idea. It means you’ve always got your own space to retreat when you need to, plus your family will know you’re trying to get some peace and quiet if you’ve gone there.
Your relaxation nook doesn’t have to be fancy. A comfy chair, a soft throw, and a few cushions can totally transform even the smallest space into a lovely, cosy place to spend some time. If you want to take things to the next level, you could add a side table, a lamp with a warm coloured bulb in it, and even a plant or two. Plants are relaxing and they can also purify the air.
You could use the space to relax, meditate, read, do some journaling, or anything that makes you feel calm.

Soothe your senses
A busy home can be loud, bright, and overwhelming, no matter how lovely a place it is and how great the people are in it. That’s most likely going to be the main reason for wanting to have some simple ways to unwind. So, why not combat the chaos with a little sensory soothing to help you feel more relaxed?
You could try some noise-cancelling headphones to aid relaxation. You can just sit in silence, play some music, or enjoy some ambient sounds.
Next, you’ll need some calming scents like lavender, cinnamon, or chamomile. There are lots of scents that help to relax you, so do some research to work out which ones you like best. Scented candles, room diffusers, or room sprays are all lovely ways to add relaxing scent to your home.
Finally, add something with a nice texture to soothe your sense of touch. This could be soft, comfortable clothes or a blanket (maybe a weighted blanket) to snuggle into. Keeping the lights dimmed will also help you to relax.
Stretch it out
You don’t need a full-blown yoga session to enjoy the benefits of a good stretch. Just a few minutes of gentle movement can really help to release built-up tension.
Simple stretches like touching your toes (or getting as close as possible), rolling your shoulders, or doing a seated forward fold can all be fantastic ways to feel looser and happier.
Don’t worry if the kids are around and need some attention, because these are stretches you can all do together. It might even become a daily family exercise that helps everyone feel good.

Go outside
Sometimes the best way to escape the busyness of a chaotic and crowded home is to literally open the door and step outside. If you’ve got a garden that’s ideal, but you can also stand on a balcony, your doorstep, or anywhere where you can breathe in the fresh air.
While you’re taking deep breaths, take a moment to listen to the birds and feel the breeze or the sun on your skin. All these things can help you stay grounded and de-stress you. If you’ve got the time and you’re not leaving little ones at home on their own, you could also take a short walk to get a bit of exercise and get your blood flowing. This is fantastic for giving you a clearer mind and more energy to tackle whatever’s waiting for you when you get back home.
Do you use any of these simple ways to unwind on busy days at home?
