Everything you need to know about improving your pastures

If you’re new to farm life, or want to improve your current pastures, one of the first things you should consider is your grass.

Since pastures tend to be several acres in size, choosing the right grass seed isn’t just ideal – it’s necessary. Whether you have horses, pigs, goats, or sheep, you must ensure they are well-fed.

This quick guide to improving your pastures covers tips for all the main varieties of livestock.

Horse pasture

Anyone who’s spent time around horses knows they graze on grass as often as possible. In addition, as a horse owner, you’ll also want to give your horse sufficient pasture time for exercise.

Since your horses will spend so much time in the pasture, you need to choose the right horse grass seed to ensure they’re well-fed. Hardy grasses that withstand overgrazing, such as Bermuda grass or fescue, are best for horses that love to graze down to the soil.

Sheep pasture

Grass has been the standard feed for sheep since farmers domesticated them. It provides vital nutrients and health benefits that allow a flock to thrive with little cost. You won’t need to worry about supplementing their grazing because the grass will provide most of what they need.

Legumes such as clover and alfalfa offer the high protein needed for healthy sheep. Similarly, grasses like chicory and trefoil can help prevent parasites, which can cause a sheep to quickly deteriorate or even perish.

Cattle pasture

Cattle farmers know that grass-fed cows provide the best organic beef and milk. Not only is grass highly nutritious, but it’s also more cost-effective than standard feed. So, when choosing grass seed, you want a blend that offers vitamins and nutrients proven to increase your herd’s output.

As with other livestock, alfalfa is one of the best plants to allow your cattle to graze. It’s high in protein and nutrients, making it filling and healthy. Ryegrass is another that cows like to feed with significant nutrients.

Pig pasture

A well-stocked pig pasture offers several benefits. Specifically, the proper nutrients can help increase reproduction, boost litter size, and keep your pigs happy. Not only that, it can help keep your feed costs low.

The best grass seed options for pigs are seeds that proliferate in significant quantities. Grasses like alfalfa, clover, and other legumes will provide essential protein to ensure proper growth. They’re also cheaper than standard feed.

goats grazing in a field of grass

Goat pasture

Farmers with little goat experience might think goats are easy to feed. However, goats can be pretty particular about the grass they eat. In addition, they benefit from mouths that allow them to eat wildflowers and plants that other animals might have trouble with.

For the best goat pasture, consider planting a mix of legumes and forbs. Legumes are an excellent source of protein, while forbs provide essential nutrients that help prevent parasites. This type of mix on your pasture will provide goats with the variation they crave.

Summary

Choosing the right grass seed mix for your pasture is crucial to healthy livestock. Consider the grasses listed here when working on improving your pastures. Your animals will graze throughout the day, so you want to be sure you’re keeping them happy and cared for with the right food.
