Review & giveaway: Lechuza PILA modular planters

April 23, 2021 by Catherine 117 Comments

This is a collaborative post in partnership with Lechuza.

Are you a fan of container gardening? As well as being a great way for beginners to get started with gardening, growing plants in containers is perfect if you’re short on space or time. Containers are also ideal for renters who need a portable garden, and they make really great gardening projects for kids. And of course, containers allow you to grow houseplants and bring the greenery indoors too.

Whatever your motivation, gardening in pots and containers is a quick and easy way to add colour, texture and interest to your garden and your indoor space.

I’ve been taking a look at the new PILA range of modular planters from Lechuza. I’ve got a fab storage unit combination to give away to a lucky winner too!

Read on to find out more about Lechuza’s PILA range and enter the giveaway.

Lechuza PILA planters lifestyle shot

Lechuza planters

The Lechuza range of containers is manufactured in Germany from high quality, weatherproof, 100% recyclable plastics. There’s a wide variety of styles, colours and finishes to choose from, so it’s not hard to find the perfect product to suit your design style and your plant’s needs.

As well as looking stunning, the Lechuza range of planters have some impressively practical features built into their design. Central to these is an innovative self-watering system that helps to provide your plants with just the right amount of water. A hidden reservoir and wick system allows plants to take up the moisture they need, and a water level indicator tells you when you need to top it up.

Lechuza self-watering system diagram

This is such a great feature to have in a planter, because container plants tend to dry out much more quickly than plants grown in the ground. The Lechuza self-watering system makes your job easier, while also helping your plants to thrive.

The other key feature of Lechuza planters is their removable liners. These stop your plants sitting in the water reservoir, and also allow you to keep the outer planter clean when you’re potting up.

The Lechuza PILA range of modular planters

PILA is a new addition to the Lechuza range for 2021. It’s a modular system with interchangeable components, so you can create a combination that’s perfectly suited to your home and your plants.

PILA planters are suitable for indoor or outdoor use and are available in six colours, each of which has a lovely matte finish. You can mix and match your colours, or make a statement with a single colour.

Lechuza PILA planters lifestyle shot

There are three main components in the PILA range: the Color planter, Color Stick and Color Storage. The Planter and Stick both have space for plants on top, while the Storage is a cupboard unit that you stack a Planter or Stick on top of. All three elements can be stacked together to a maximum height of three units. There’s also a coaster base which allows you to move your planters around easily.

I’ve been trying out the Color Storage in slate grey with the Color Stick in light grey.

Lechuza PILA modular planters

Assembly is absolutely minimal with PILA. You simply add in the water level indicator, and stack the units together.

Lechuza PILA modular planters

The planters are supplied with the Lechuza stick system, which allows your plants to access the water reservoir. You push a stick into the base of each pot, which then acts as a wick to draw water up into the soil as required. It’s easy to do, and only takes a couple of seconds.

Inserting a watering wick into a plant pot base

Adding your plants to the planters is also very low-effort. The removable liners are designed to hold four 10-12cm plant pots, so all you have to do is pop them in and you’re done. No planting, no mess, and no tools required.

Adding potted ranunculus plants to a container

It took me less than five minutes to create an instant display.

Lechuza PILA modular planter with plants

I love the modern, clean design of the PILA range. It’s perfect for our contemporary patio, and of course you could just as easily use it indoors too. I filled my planter with ranunculus which will grow to create a lovely floral display, but I also really like the idea of creating a mini herb garden. The stacking element of PILA makes it brilliant for vertical gardening, and you could use multiple units to create a range of different heights to really liven up a balcony or patio.

The storage element of PILA is just brilliant too. I’ve used mine to store the gardening essentials I use on a regular basis, so I don’t have to open up the shed as often. As the weather warms up there’ll be a bottle of sun cream and a book in there too!

Lechuza PILA range: my verdict

I’ve had a really positive experience with my PILA products. They look fantastic, they’re lovely quality, and they’re very simple to use. I love the combination of modern styling and practical design, and the modular element of the range makes it so flexible. The self-watering system is a particularly clever feature which I’m sure will make a real difference to the health of my plants. Finally, the fact that you can use PILA indoors or outdoors is another big plus for me, and not a feature you find very often in pots and containers.

If you’d like to make container gardening easier, or are simply looking for stylish and practical planters, PILA is a great option. Which combination of units would you choose for your home or garden?

I would love one of the tall containers to take pots of herbs by the back door and also one of the planter troughs – lovely with lots of geraniums. So easy to replace pots rather than have to dig out plants and I like the idea that they can also be used indoors

I like the petrol blue option for the Pila color – unusual colour for garden accessories. It would really brighten up my tiny, drab back yard. I’d definitely grow flowers, probably keep it simple with some pansies or dahlias.

I love these! So clever. I’d choose the light grey planter with the sand brown storage as I think those colours so really well together.

I am drawn to the Colour Storage combi. Why didn’t someone invent these before now? So useful: so stylish.

I like them all but the dark grey and slate would be the best combination for my patio.

A PILA Colour Stick and a PILA Colour Storage would definitely fit the bill – so I could store some useful garden essentials underneath whilst display some well irrigated colourful plants on top. Win win! 🙂

I would go for the slate grey and cream combination.

I love the petrol blue so I’d have that as the stick on top of a slate storage base!
