What is National Children’s Gardening Week?

National Children’s Gardening Week takes place every year at the end of May. It aims to capture children’s enthusiasm for growing plants and being in the garden.

Schools, community groups and families can all get involved in the fun, via a programme of news and events that encourage kids to get out there and have a go at gardening.

National Children’s Gardening Week also supports the wonderful Greenfingers charity, which is dedicated to providing magical gardens for children in hospices suffering from life limiting illnesses.

The next National Children’s Gardening Week is taking place from 29th May to 6th June 2021. You can find out more about it here.

The website also has a brilliant Things to do section which is full of fun kids gardening projects – so you don’t have to wait until next May to get the kids busy in the garden.

What a truly wonderful prize! We had big plans for our garden this year and took out some of our old veggie beds where the wood was totally rotted through and were going to build veggie beds at the end of the garden and make this end a patio and a place to relax and read etc. My husband managed to lay a new patio through lockdown but injured himself in the process so never got around to sorting out the other end of the garden. So that would be my priority for spring / summer 2021, we’d get some planters and veggies growing. My daughter loves to help in the garden and loves seeing the “magic” of seeds becoming carrots or lettuce etc. And it helps her eat more veg when she’s grown them herself. Would love to have strawberries in the garden again as we used to as they are lots of fun to grow and watch them ripen (and try to pick them before the birds get them all).

If I had a £250 garden voucher I’d buy some dwarf fruit trees for the patio. Daisy and Leo love to help with collecting the fruit from our apple and pear trees, and collecting tomatoes from the plants, but often the fruit is too high for them to safely help. I’d love them to have some dwarf trees so they could collect fruit safely.

I’d love to get a new garden bench, the weather has finally taken its toll on ours. I’d also love to get some bird feeding supplies. We have a great free-standing bird feeder made from driftwood, but it feels like it won’t last much longer (thanks to the Lake District weather again!) so a nice garden centrepiece bird feeder would be amazing. We’ve really enjoyed watching the birds in our garden throughout the lockdowns this year.

We moved into our home in Autumn 2020 and the garden is sparse and bare but because of the time of year we were unable to do much with it all, we have taken down the rotten shed and planted some “lasagne” bulb planters to give the garden some early colour but it needs far more. Its quite a large garden so i’m hoping to set aside part of it for a wild flower garden and intend on planting bee friendly plants and fruit trees; this voucher would be an amazing help, thank you.

Haddy, my 8 year old aspiring gardener and nature lover has loved being outdoors growing his own fruit and veg and encouraging wildlife into our garden. He has sown seeds and tended plants, planted wildflowers , built a hedgehog house and fed birds . The pure delight on his face when his first harvest of tomatoes , beans, peas, carrots , beetroot, pumpkins and strawberries was ready was wonderful. Haddy would love to make our garden home to even more wildlife next year and put up a bird box. Some new seeds, raspberry canes and vegetable plants would be perfect to expand his fruit and veg patch. He’d also love to plant his own apple tree.
