Would you like to garden more sustainably? If the answer to that question is yes, then this fantastic rain barrel giveaway is perfect for you.

I’m thrilled to be partnering with The Organic Gardening Catalogue who are offering one lucky reader a stylish Rain Barrel Water Butt worth £289.99. Such a brilliant prize!

The Organic Gardening Catalogue

The Organic Gardening Catalogue has been dedicated to promoting organic growing for over 50 years. In addition to water butts, the range covers everything from seeds and plants to equipment and gifts, so it’s a great place to buy your organic gardening supplies. You can explore the product range here.

Why collect rainwater to use in the garden?

Collecting rainwater is a really good idea for a number of reasons.

The most obvious of these is water conservation. Using less water from the public supply reduces demand, which is good from an environmental perspective, and can also save you money on your water bills.

In addition, using rainwater conserves the energy that would otherwise be consumed in order to obtain it via a tap. Diverting rainfall into a water butt also helps to prevent soil erosion and flooding caused by heavy rain and storms. Last but not least, watering plants with rainwater can be a better option, because it’s naturally soft and the ideal pH for most plants.

For all of these reasons, rainwater collection is an important part of gardening sustainably.

If you think water butts aren’t very nice to look at, think again.

Yes, there are some functional designs on the market, but there are also some seriously stylish options that you’d be forgiven for thinking weren’t anything to do with collecting rainwater. The Rain Barrel Water Butt is a great example of these.

The design is modern and sleek, while still being very practical and easy to use. It’s available in olive green (pictured above) and black (pictured below), so you can complement your outdoor space perfectly.

I particularly love the subtle ribbed detailing which gives this rain barrel lots of texture. It’s made in the Netherlands from recycled plastic, so it’s great from a sustainability viewpoint too.

The Rain Barrel Water Butt holds up to 130 litres of water, and comes with a drainpipe connector for easy installation. There’s also a built-in debris filter to help keep your water supply fresh and clear of blockages.

As well as the practical features, there’s a clever detail on the Rain Barrel that helps it to blend into your outdoor space. The top has a built-in planter, which allows you to green the whole thing up. Once this is planted, it looks like a stylish tall planter, not a water butt. I like the idea of growing a little herb garden, or some colourful bedding plants – you could also add in some trailing plants to make it look even more like a planter. What would you grow in it?
