8 popular houseplants and their benefits

Houseplants are such an important part of the home. Without them a room can lack a sense of freshness and calm, both of which play a significant role in our mental health. And adding houseplants to your home can provide physical benefits too.

Let’s take a look at eight popular houseplants, and the benefits they can offer. You can learn more about your indoor garden, plant by plant.

Money plant

This isn’t a money-producing plant unfortunately, but its benefits are still impressive.

Money plants are easy to grow, thanks to tech gadgets such as an instant root growing box. In a matter of days the roots will start to develop, and you can then plant them up and place them anywhere you like.

We are surrounded by devices such as computers, laptops and cellphones, all of which emit radiation. A money plant is a great counter for this, acting as an anti-radiator for your indoor spaces. It’s also a great way to create a sense of calm and peace in a room, which in turn will help to relieve stress.

Spider plant

One of the most popular houseplants, spider plants are ideal for creating a jungle vibe due to their long, dense leaves. In addition to tropical looks, having this plant in your home will bring numerous benefits that are not visible to the naked eye.

Products like paper bags, tissue paper, tablecloths, and paper towels are found in every home. These products bring Formaldehyde along with them. Formaldehyde can cause asthma and skin problems if exposed to at high intensity. The spider plant nullifies this naturally occurring harmful compound by removing carbon monoxide and other harmful impurities from the air.

Aloe Vera

There is a strong chance that you are already aware of aloe vera’s medicinal uses. This plant is most commonly used for ointments, hair and skincare products. The gel-like substance extracted from the leaves is a homemade remedy for dry skin, burns, and even digestive problems.

Aloe Vera plants will be happiest in a bright location. If you’ve got a warm, sunny patio, you can even move them outside in the summer for a holiday.

Bird’s Nest Fern

If you’re running out of ways to decorate your home, a Bird’s Nest Fern should be your go-to plant. These picture-perfect plants have lovely textured leaves, they’re also low maintenance and an ideal option for shadier rooms.

Cigarette smoke and pollution in the air are the primary sources of harmful chemicals like xylene and Formaldehyde and, if not eliminated, can cause irritation to the skin and lungs. Bird’s Nest Fern acts as an excellent filter for these chemicals, performing an antioxidant role thanks to its phenol content.

Because it doesn’t contain any toxic substances, Bird’s Nest Fern is also a good choice if you have pets in your home.

Snake Plant

Yes, the leaves look like snakes, but that’s the only threat posed by this plant!

Those striking leaves are great for making a strong statement, but snake plants are also very beneficial when it comes to purifying the air in our homes. They act as a removal agent for toxins like Trichloroethylene, Toluene, and Benzene, making the environment more breathable and fresh.

Rosemary

You might not associate a herb with houseplants, but rosemary can look really pretty, and it boasts a significant amount of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.

In addition, according to research published in Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, the benefits of rosemary’s scent include improving your brain performance and memory, and maintaining longer concentration spans.

Rosemary is great to use in your cooking too, because as well as adding flavour, the leaves are rich in Iron, Calcium, and Vitamin B-6.

Zebra Cactus

Zebra Cactus is one of many easy-to-grow succulents that you can use indoors. With extremely low maintenance requirements, it’s an ideal houseplant for beginners.

Apart from being unique and eye-catching in its appearance, Zebra Cactus can act as an agent to improve air humidity levels, making it more breathable. This increase in humidity will help combat health problems such as sore throats, dry coughs, and dry skin.

English Ivy

If you suffer from allergies, bringing English Ivy into your home could provide relief. This plant is known for purifying mold particles in the air that can cause allergy problems.

English Ivy is best suited to your bedroom, where it will help to ease your breathing and improve your quality of sleep. It’s worth bearing in mind that this is a poisonous plant, so keep it out of the reach of children.

Introducing plants to your home can provide a source of calm, and help to create a stress-free atmosphere. In addition, you can use plants as natural air purifiers to improve the health of your interior space. Add in the fact that indoor plants are a fantastic way to add colour, texture and interest to a room, and it’s not hard to see why houseplants are such a great choice for a modern home.
