How to add character to any room with flowers

February 5, 2021 by Catherine Leave a Comment

Flowers are an easy way to brighten a place up, and they can quickly create a welcoming and warm atmosphere. If you use them in the right way, a floral arrangement can also add character to any room. We all love to use flowers to create a ‘look’ in venues for important events, and you can use the same principle within your home.

Whether you’re looking to add a bit of colour to a room, or you’d like to highlight a specific aspect, flowers are a great way to do it.

To get you started, here are some clever tips on using flowers in the home from a well-known floral arrangement company in the U.S.

Use tall plants in large rooms

If your room is large, you need to choose plants and flowers that can make a statement in a big space.

Large rooms with tall ceilings can accommodate tall plants. You can use plants that produce bright flowers, such as Caesalpinia pulcherrima (Bird of Paradise), or make a statement with plants that have striking leaves. Dracaena marginata (Dragon Tree) and Ficus elastica (Rubber Plant) are good options here.

When you’re choosing large plants, bear in mind that they will need space to grow, both upwards and outwards. A corner is an ideal spot for a tall plant.

You can also use tall floral arrangements in large rooms to create a real impact. Lilies, sunflowers, gladiolus, delphiniums and roses all work well in tall arrangements. If you love gardening, you can create your own flower cutting garden where you can grow your favourite blooms to bring indoors. You might even like to grow your own birth flowers.

Choose white flowers for elegance

If you’e like to create a serene, elegant vibe in a room, white flowers are the way to go.

There’s a wide variety of white flowers to choose from, so you can easily create a display that reflects the style of your room and makes a statement. Popular choices include orchids, tulips, roses, cosmos, gerbera, freesia and alstroemeria.

The secret to an elegant arrangement with white flowers is to go all white; this includes the vase and any decorations. Doing this allows you to create a coherent display that attracts the eye and delivers real wow factor.

Use unusual items as containers

The internet went crazy for upcycled flower containers – think welly boots, tin cans, old pots, kettles and more – so why not give it a try in your home?

With this approach, you can re-purpose old items you don’t use anymore but still like, combining them with the beauty of your favourite flowers.

This is quite a quirky look which is well-suited to bohemian and shabby chic interior styles. Having said that, you could easily use vintage china to create a floral display that works well in a more formal room setting.

Another great idea is to turn old glass bottles into vases, this works well with small posies and single stems.

To create the most impact, make sure you coordinate your colours. For example, if you’re using green wellies, it’s a good idea to use yellow flowers as the two colours work together well.

Flowers are an easy way to keep things fresh and lively in your home. Add to this the fact that it’s scientifically proven that indoor plants help filter the air and keep the brain in a happier state, and you’re onto a winner.

Moreover, houseplants and flowers are easy to care for, and don’t require a large financial investment. This means you have easy access to affordable indoor decorations all year round.

What’s your top tip for using flowers in the home?
