Welcome to a new product review and giveaway, perfect for those of you who are looking to spruce up a patio or deck area. We’ve been trying out the Forest Toulouse trellis planter from online gardening supplier GardenSite, and I’ve also got one of these lovely planters worth £89.99 to give away to a lucky winner.
The Forest Toulouse trellis planter has a generous container with an integral trellis for climbing plants, allowing you to create a plant display with lots of height. It’s ideal for concealing a less-than-lovely wall or fence, and because it’s made from pressure-treated timber it will last for years.
The planter arrives in two pieces; the trellis and the base. It comes with four screws to attach the trellis; this isn’t a tricky job, but as the wood is really solid we drilled some holes first to make it easier.
Once assembled, I decided to line the planter with some plastic sheeting; I’d recommend doing this as there are gaps between the planks along the base. I made plenty of small holes in the sheeting to allow for good drainage.
The Forest Toulouse planter is really sturdy and the wood is lovely quality; the whole thing feels very well-made. I love the simple, chunky style too. At 135cm high it’s a great option for a spot where height is limited. It fits perfectly under our kitchen window which is close to our seating area, so we’ll be able to enjoy the plants while we relax.
From a practical point of view, the pressure-treated timber makes it really durable (in fact there’s a 15 year guarantee against rot), and the built-in feet raise it off the ground to aid drainage and prevent waterlogging on the container base. All in all, it’s a great addition to our garden. I also love the fact that 2.5% from the sale of this product will be donated to Thrive, a national charity which works to help people living with a disability or mental illness, to transform their lives through gardening.
As we’re nearing the end of summer, I’ve filled up the planter with a selection of plants that will give us plenty of colour and interest as we move towards autumn.
The climbing plant is Clematis ‘Étoile Violette’, which is a later summer flowering viticella variety with gorgeous rich purple blooms. For some contrasting foliage interest I’ve use Cineraria ‘Silver Dust’, I love the texture on this plant and it looks amazing at dusk too.
The kids chose the bedding plants, and went for pansies in a range of pink shades. These will quickly fill up the space and flower away for months.
I’m really pleased with the finished planter; it’s already made an unappealing wall far nicer to look at, and as the plants become established it’s only going to get better. I like the idea of mixing up the planting scheme with different bedding plants for each season, I suspect the kids will insist on choosing these every time from now on! I think the planter would also make a fantastic grow-your-own container, with things like runner beans or peas on the trellis, and herbs or other veggies in the container.
The Forest Toulouse trellis planter costs £89.99 from GardenSite, you can find out more and order here. What would you grow in it?
