Improving our shed security with Burg-Wächter

We store all of our bikes in our shed, and unfortunately we’ve had to deal with a shed break-in and stolen bikes twice in the last few years. Our shed door has a good lock and tamper-proof hinges, but we’re keen to make the bikes themselves difficult to steal should thieves manage to get in again. Top shed security tips from Burg-Wächter

As you can probably imagine, the team at Burg-Wächter know their stuff when it comes to home security. Here are their top tips for keeping your garden and shed secure.

Prevent and protect. Thieves are on the lookout for an easy steal. Anything which is obviously locked up or secured will act as prevention. The aim here is to encourage thieves to move on and look for an easier target.
An item which is individually locked, as well as being securely stored, will delay a thief. This will hopefully make them move on, or take less.
Use good quality locks, padlocks and hinges that are designed in a way that makes it difficult for a thief to unscrew or cut through them.
Make it clear to thieves that your household takes security seriously. Obvious locks on gates, sheds and garages, a burglar alarm box, motion sensitive security lights and CCTV will all give thieves a message that they’re not going to have an easy time stealing anything.

Securing our bikes with Burg-Wächter

We used the Burg-Wächter U-lock & anchor kit and Double Loop Security Cable to make our bikes more secure in our shed.

The U-lock and anchor kit includes a U-lock, a heavy-duty ground anchor, and a heavy-duty chain. The kit has been independently tested and approved by ‘Sold Secure’, and awarded ‘Secured by Design’ certification, which is the official police initiative to support crime reduction through good product design.

The ground anchor is made from 6mm hardened steel plate and has tamper resistant bolt heads. It can be mounted on a floor or wall; we fixed ours to the floor of the shed.

The heavy-duty chain is made from hardened steel with 10mm squared links and high quality textile coating. We went for the 2m length which is long enough to secure all four of our bikes to the ground anchor; it’s also available in 1m and 1.5m lengths.

The U-lock is really heavy-duty too. It has a hardened steel shackle and body, and a double bolted mechanism. Attaching it to the chain is quick and easy, and in our experience there’s very little chance of accidentally failing to lock it properly.

For an extra layer of security, we added the Burg-Wächter double loop security cable. These are available in a range of lengths, and are designed to be used with a U-lock, D-lock or padlock. The cable is made from braided steel with a vinyl coating.

We went for the 4.5m length, which is easily long enough to secure four bikes together.

Thedouble loop security cable is also ideal for taking on a bike ride to secure your bikes together, or to a bike stand. And if you’re worried about wheel theft, you can use it to secure all parts of a single bike together too.

I feel very reassured now that we’ve got these Burg-Wächter products installed in the shed. They’re all well-designed and high quality, and are more than capable of securing our bikes and making it really difficult for thieves to steal them.
