Even if you’re not battling hay fever at this time of year, grass can pose something of a challenge. Lawns seem to be growing before your eyes, creating a need for frequent mowing, and those hard-to-reach areas can quickly get out of hand. This is where garden strimmers come into their own, making a tricky job so much easier and neater.
This week I’ve been testing a strimmer which boasts the latest technology on the garden tools market – the cordless string trimmer from the Ego Power+ range.
I must admit I had a real preconception of cordless garden strimmers, namely that they were noisy, messy, fiddly to use and not very effective. So I was interested to see if the Ego Power+ model lived up to it’s claims of being “no fumes, no fuss, no noise”.
We had a couple of perfect areas at the garden and allotment to put the strimmer through it’s paces. In our garden we have lawn running up to log edging which is really tricky to mow.
At the allotment we have an area at the edge of the plot which I’ve been planning to dig out and plant with lavender, I haven’t got round to it yet and it’s looking rather overgrown.
Out of the box the Ego strimmer is really easy to assemble; you just need to attach the handle and guard with the allen key provided, then once you’ve charged your battery you’re ready to go. It’s the battery that is the cutting-edge element of the range: the products use super-powerful, rechargeable, 56v lithium-ion batteries. This makes the tools super-powerful too, and they’re also a cleaner and more environmentally-friendly option than traditional petrol engine powered tools.
So off we went with our first job – the garden. The Ego had this job done in under a minute – it really is powerful!
The strimmer is very well-made whilst also being lightweight to handle. You can adjust the handle easily to suit your height – very handy if more than one person is going to use it – and the plastic strimmer line is easy to adjust and replace from it’s cassette reel. It’s well-balanced and pivots very easily, something that really matters with a strimmer, as you need to use it at the correct angle to get a good clean finish. As it’s such a powerful tool I was expecting a lot of vibration but this wasn’t the case, yes there is some but it’s perfectly manageable. And the lithium-ion battery makes it so quiet – none of the loud chugging that you get from petrol-powered models.
Next job was the tougher challenge: the overgrown allotment. The grass really was high on this patch and I wasn’t sure how the Ego would perform, however this is where the power really came into it’s own and in about 2 minutes the whole area was cleared. Pretty impressive.
This product really does live up to it’s claims, it did the job quickly, easily and quietly. At £179 plus around £100 for a battery and charger it’s not a budget option, but if you’ve got a large area to cover on a regular basis it’s a great investment purchase that will serve you very well. You can also use the same battery in all the other tools in the range.
The Ego Power+ cordless string trimmer is part of a range of garden power tools including a mower, hedgetrimmer, blower and chainsaw. The range is available from the Ego website or you can use their search function to find a local stockist.
I was loaned the Ego Power+ Cordless String Trimmer for review purposes, all opinions and comments are honest and genuine.
