Now that the cold weather is firmly a distant memory, have you been getting outdoors and making the most of nature? We’re an active family and we try to make time for outdoor adventures as much as possible; our most recent trip involved climbing Snowdon, which is definitely our most ambitious expedition so far!
I’ve written in the past about the importance of having the right kit and clothing for outdoor pursuits; it makes such a difference to how successful (or not) your trip is. The lovely people at Simply Hike asked us to review some items from their Berghaus range of outdoor clothing, so we decided to put some of the men’s collection through it’s paces.
Men’s Fortress Windproof Jacket
The Fortress Windproof Jacket is all about keeping out the wind, with a close-fitting hood and fleece lining to help you retain heat.
The fabric on the sleeves, front and hood is windproof, the cuffs are elasticated, and there’s a drawstring toggle at the bottom of the body, so this jacket does a fantastic job of keeping out chilly draughts. That doesn’t mean movement is restricted though; the stretch fleece on the side and back panels helps you move around easily.
There are three generous pockets, all with a zip to keep out the wind and keep your belongings safe. The Fortress jacket is perfect for wearing as an outer layer in dry weather, or you could add a waterproof coat over the top for total protection. All in all, it’s a very useful, well-designed piece of outdoor clothing. It’s easy to wash too.
Men’s Paclite Waterproof Trousers
A pair of waterproof over-trousers are a must if you’re planning on being outdoors in all weathers. The Paclite Waterproof Trousers are made from Gore-Tex Paclite Helium, which is 50-100% more breathable than comparable lightweight fabrics on the market.
The trousers roll up into a tiny space and come with a little mesh bag to keep them compact, so it’s really easy to take them with you ‘just in case’.
A big plus on these trousers is the 3/4 length side zips: these make it super-easy to get them on and off, even when you’re wearing big walking boots.
You can also open the zips from the top to give you access to your pockets, which is a neat little feature.
The Paclite Waterproof Trousers may be lightweight, but they absolutely do their job: they’re breathable, but completely waterproof and windproof. Mr H cycles to work come rain or shine, so as well as taking these on family outings they’re getting plenty of use on the daily commute.
Mr H has had a lot of outdoor clothing over the years, and he’s quite hard to please, but he’s impressed with these Berghaus products. They’re well-made, really good quality, and do their job well. I can tell that they’re going to get lots of use on our outdoor trips.
