Review & Giveaway: Primrose solar water feature

April 20, 2016 by Catherine 265 Comments

installing a solar powered water feature is an easy garden project which will really enhance your sensory enjoyment of your garden

Are you planning any garden projects at the moment?  This time of year tends to inspire us to make some improvements to our outdoor space, and I’m no exception.

I’ve always wanted to have a water feature in our garden; with the water’s lovely sound and gentle movement, they’re a real treat for the senses, not to mention their benefits as an attraction for local wildlife.  I’ve never quite managed to install one though, mainly due to my concerns over the amount of work required to provide power, and the lack of space available.  Having done a bit of homework recently I realised that solar-powered water features are an easier option, so when Primrose got in touch to ask me to review their Perth square 4-tier cascading solar water feature it was just the motivation I needed!

solaray perth square four tier solar water feature

You’d think the Perth water feature was made from granite, wouldn’t you?  It’s actually made from high quality polyresin, so it looks like the real thing, but is much lighter and really hard-wearing.  It’s completely self-contained, with no need for a separate water reservoir, and at 39cm square it’s really compact, making it perfect for small outdoor spaces.  It comes in sections which are very straightforward to put together, only taking a couple of minutes.

We found it makes things easier if you line up the sections like this before attaching the pump:

Once everything is assembled, you’re ready for the fun part – planting!  The kids got stuck in at this stage, as you can see little hands and tools are perfect for the job.

I love the added bonus of being able to plant up sections of the water feature; this gives the whole thing a really natural feel and softens the overall effect perfectly.  We planted ours with some Spring bulbs, violas and primroses, plus a little section of low-maintenance succulents.  These little planting sections provide lots of versatility: it will be a quick and easy job to change the plants according to the season, just like you would with a traditional garden container.  It would make a fantastic herb planter too.

A tip for planting up: do it before you put the water in, as you will inevitably get some soil into the water compartments, and it’s much easier to clean this out when they’re empty.

Once all the plants were in, we chose a sunny spot for the feature, next to our garden bench.  Then it was time to add the water and watch the whole thing come to life!

solaray perth square four tier solar water feature

The solar panel needs to be in full sunlight to operate the pump properly, but that doesn’t mean the actual water feature has to be in full sun; the cable is a generous length at ten feet, allowing you plenty of scope to find the right spot for the solar panel.

I really like the fact that this product is solar-powered for a number of reasons.  It’s quick and easy to install, with no need to sink a cable under your garden from a power source (you will probably want to hide the cable, but it can be just under the surface of the soil in a border, or under a gravelled area like ours).  You can’t hear the motor at all, so there’s nothing to detract from the lovely sound of the water.  It also doesn’t cost anything to run, it’s environmentally friendly, and because solar power has a very low voltage it’s much safer for kids to be around than a mains-powered feature.

The only drawback I can see is that you need sunlight for the pump to work, so in cloudy conditions the water doesn’t flow.  This is true of any solar-powered feature that doesn’t store any solar energy, I personally don’t mind this, and the fact that the product is also a planter means it still looks lovely when the water isn’t moving.

Because the Perth water feature is compact and made from polyresin rather than stone, it’s actually quite easy to move it around your garden.  This is great if you change your mind about where you want it – for example, if it turns out to be suffering at the hands of the ball games! – and the fact that it’s solar-powered means the cable is easy to move too.

We’re really enjoying our new, low-maintenance water feature.  It looks great, costs nothing to run, and has brought an extra layer of sensory enjoyment to being in the garden for very little effort.  I think it’s a great option for a small, busy family garden, can you see it working in your own outdoor space?

The Perth Square 4-Tier Solar Water Feature is currently on offer at £89.99 from Primrose – and I’ve got one to give away too, so one lucky winner will be enjoying their own low-maintenance water feature very soon.  To enter the giveaway just follow the instructions below.  Good luck!

It’s functionality is brilliant…having the long cable means you can pretty much move it to any part of your garden even in the shaded areas as you don’t need the solar panel to be right next to it 🙂 Plus, being able to plant on three of the levels gives it a lot of depth and contrasts so well with it precise square levels…really lovely! I think the best thing about it is that you can move it around without worrying about a power source – i like to move my pots about and this would be the same. At the same time you would not need to worry about where the spade goes and that its safer – i have never been a fan of electric in the garden! I think if I won this I would plant some of those tiny alpine plants in it – those little planting pockets would be ideal.

As the weather is getting better , i think this Primrose solar water feature would look great in my garden. I like it because its solar powered (no plugging it into the mains) The fact that it has so many tiers for the water to trickle down which will sound very soothing. And finally that you can plant flowers in it as well.
