We’re an active family; we love to get outdoors and enjoy nature as often as possible. We particularly enjoy family walks, and often explore woodland, coastal and hilly areas. So when Trespass asked us to review their Rhone mens walking boot, we were well-placed to put them through their paces.
If you enjoy exploring the great oudoors with your family, you’ll know that appropriate footwear is really important. We’ve learned from experience that having the right walking boots and shoes can make or break a family day out. Wellies lost forever in a bog? Been there. Soggy, sandy socks after a Winter paddle in trainers? Done that. Blisters and no plasters? Urrghh.
We’ve been particularly adventurous in the last few weeks, with trips to the beach and woodland walks in Wales, and a day out walking over Easter weekend, so we’ve really been able to give the Rhone boots a good road test.
The first thing Chris noticed about the Rhone boots was just how comfortable they are from the first time you wear them. Yes, they’re pretty chunky and solid, but that doesn’t mean you need to endure the pain of wearing them in. The boots held his feet securely without being too rigid; there was enough give to make them comfortable, but not so much that your feet slip around. On their first outing he wore them for a full day’s walking, and his feet felt fine at the end.
The soles are sturdy rubber, which gives really good grip and also helps you keep your balance on uneven ground. Chris often carries our youngest during our walks, so this is a particularly welcome feature. They’re still flexible enough to allow your feet to move naturally though – and even try a spot of tree-climbing…
We also like the fact that the uppers are made from action leather, rather than a synthetic material. This makes them super-durable, and also very easy to clean; plus you don’t have to wait hours for them to dry after you’ve washed them down. We’ll be treating them with a leather protector to make sure they stay in good condition.
Now obviously walking boots need to be waterproof; but ideally they should also be breathable, otherwise your feet will still get damp and uncomfortable. The Rhone boots tick both boxes. We’ve found that some boots that claim to be waterproof actually aren’t, but the Rhone boots coped with a soggy beach and really deep puddles no problem. They’re actually waterproof right up to about an inch below their tops, thanks to the webbing around the tongue.
If you’re looking for a sturdy, all-round walking boot that’s great for family exploring, the Rhone boots are ideal. They’re good quality, and feel like they will last for many years if you look after them. Most importantly, you can just put them on and forget about them, safe in the knowledge that they’ll deal with water, mud and uneven ground perfectly well, while you get on with your day out.
The Rhone boots are currently on offer at £44.99 with limited sizes available, pop over to the waterproof mens boots section of the Trespass website to browse their full range.
