When is National Corn Dog Day?

National Corn Dog Day falls on the third Saturday in March. This lines up perfectly with March Madness, because what pairs better with basketball than deep-fried goodness on a stick?

The holiday started back in 1992 in Oregon when two friends, Brady Sahnow and Henry Otley, decided that watching basketball all day deserved a snack worthy of the occasion. Since then, it’s grown into a nationwide celebration, with restaurants, food trucks, and even major brands jumping in on the fun.

Why celebrate corn dogs?

Few foods are as fun, nostalgic, and downright satisfying as a corn dog. They bring back memories of county fairs, summer carnivals, and childhood trips to amusement parks. Plus, they’re crispy, portable, and impossible to eat without a little joy.

Beyond nostalgia, corn dogs are a good balance of flavour and texture. They’re crispy on the outside, soft and slightly sweet on the inside, with a juicy hot dog in the centre. And when you make them from scratch, they’re even better.

How can you make a corn dog at home?

So, how do you make a corn dog that rivals the ones from your favourite fair? Although there are plenty of ways to approach it, a few key steps make all the difference.

1. Pick the right hot dogs

Not all hot dogs are created equal. If you want that perfect bite, go for high-quality hot dogs with a good snap. If you like a little variety, try turkey dogs, veggie dogs, or even cheese-filled options.

Whatever you choose, pat the hot dogs dry before dipping to help the batter stick better.

2. Prep your skewers

A sturdy skewer is key. Classic wooden sticks work fine, but if you want a more reliable grip, look for bamboo skewers or popsicle sticks.

Insert the skewer into the hot dog about three-quarters of the way up. Too far, and they’ll poke through the top; too shallow, and the dog might slip off mid-bite.

3. Mix up the batter

The batter is what makes a corn dog special. A typical mix includes cornmeal for texture, flour for structure, a little sugar for sweetness, and baking powder to keep it light. Buttermilk or milk gives it richness, while an egg helps bind everything together. Whisk it all up until smooth, but don’t overmix.

4. Get the oil temperature right

Too hot, and your corn dogs will burn on the outside before cooking through. Too cool, and there’s a risk of soaking up oil and becoming greasy. The sweet spot is around 350 to 375°F. A kitchen thermometer helps, but if you don’t have one, drop a little batter in. If it sizzles and floats, you’re good to go.

5. Dip and coat evenly

Pour your batter into a tall glass for easy dipping. Submerge each hot dog fully, then slowly lift and let the excess batter drip off. Twisting slightly as you remove it helps coat it evenly and prevents drips.

If you’re having trouble getting an even coating, try rolling the battered dog in a little extra cornmeal before frying.

6. Fry to golden perfection

Carefully lower the coated hot dog into the hot oil. Holding it for a few seconds before letting go helps set the batter and keeps it from sticking to the bottom.

Fry in batches, turning occasionally until the corn dogs are deep golden brown (about three to five minutes). Drain on paper towels and let them cool slightly before digging in.

7. Serve with your favourite dips

Ketchup and mustard are classic accompaniments, but there are lots of other options too. Try honey mustard, spicy mayo, cheese sauce, or even maple syrup for a sweet-savoury twist. No matter how you dress them up, homemade corn dogs are best enjoyed fresh and crispy, straight out of the fryer.
