Nature crafts for autumn

Nature is the most fantastic resource when it comes to craft materials, and in autumn we’re spoilt for choice. Leaves, feathers, berries, nuts, flowers… there’s so much nature treasure to collect and craft with.

My nature book for kids *A Year of Nature Craft & Play has a whole section on autumn crafts and nature play ideas you can try. There’s an activity for every week of the year, all using materials you can easily find in nature.

You can also check out my autumn nature crafts post and my Pinterest board for lots of fun nature craft projects. My pumpkin fairy house is an ideal autumn activity for kids too.

Nature crafts are a great way to keep costs down, and because you’re using natural materials they’re eco-friendly too. Just make sure you only collect items that have already fallen from trees and plants, and encourage kids to wash their hands after collecting nature treasure.

Fun nature walks and games for autumn

My other nature play book *A Year of Nature Walks & Games is also a brilliant resource for fun in autumn. From fun walking games and nature science projects to outdoor games and nature scavenger hunts, there’s plenty to keep kids busy and active all year round.

Make a nature display

All that lovely nature treasure doesn’t have to be turned into a specific craft either. A nature table or tray is a nice way to contain an ever-growing collection, and it also allows kids to explore and add to their finds easily.

Autumn gardening projects for kids

There are lots of fun gardening projects for kids to try in autumn. It’s the perfect time to sow wildflower seeds, this is an easy outdoor activity for children and a fun way to make your garden more wildlife-friendly. Another gardening project my kids love is planting a bulb lasagne in a pot; this is a clever way of layering *spring bulbs for months of colour in one container. In early autumn you can still plant fall flowers in pots or grow salad outdoors, or you could take the gardening indoors and grow microgreens or start a windowsill herb garden.

You can of course also get the kids involved with your own gardening projects too! For example, they can help with raking leaves, weeding, digging and planting, or make homemade bird feeders and pumpkin bird feeders to help garden wildlife in the colder months.

Go foraging

It’s harvest time, and there are lots of edible nuts and berries to be foraged for this season. Blackberries are usually very easy to find in hedgerows, and elderberries and sloe berries are also in plentiful supply. You could also hunt for sweet chestnuts to roast. Foraging is a lovely simple outdoor activity for the whole family; just make sure you take *gloves with you to protect from thorns, and always stick to public land.

Collect seeds

It’s not just edible crops that you can harvest at this time of year. Autumn is a fabulous time to harvest seeds from your garden to grow into free plants, and kids can get involved in this outdoor activity too.  My saving seeds post shows you how to do it.

Go on a tree or leaf trail

Leaves are in plentiful supply on the ground in autumn, making it a perfect time to take the kids on a leaf trail.  You’ll need an identification guide, find one here.  For trees, you might like to get hold of a *tree ID book or download a tree ID app. The Woodland Trust has a free app, here’s some more info:

Maybe you could do some leaf printing or make mason jar lanterns when you get home, these are always a big hit with my kids.

Give back

One of my favourite things about growing our own food is being able to share it with others.  Sharing your harvest or plants with a local food bank, friends or neighbours is a wonderful way to make a positive difference in your local community, it’s a great life skills experience for kids too.

Just go outdoors!

When it comes to fun outdoor activities for kids, you don’t have to make it complicated. Sometimes all you need is a pair of wellies and a coat to get out and enjoy nature activities with kids. It can be as simple as going for a walk and playing walking games, or visiting your local park or nature reserve. In my experience, nature will always provide you with something interesting. The added bonus of this approach is you need less time in the way of prep!

  1. A wonderful range of activities to inspire and how lovely to read your last one about giving back too, there is so much to take from nature but we rarely thing of giving back. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.

  2. These are great ideas! Love the ‘journey stick’ one and hadn’t even thought of collecting seeds. Great photographs too!

    1. The journey stick is quite a new idea for us too the kids really love doing it – it’s good for any season too!

  3. Love Rhiw time of year and the bestest for simple fun with the kiddos. Great list, thank you for sharing X

  4. Oh I love the journey stick idea, not one I have come across before! Thank you for the inspiration x

    1. It’s brilliant – we haven’t made one in Autumn yet, I suspect this might be the best season for it.

  5. Some lovely ideas here :-) I like the idea of a nature table. You have inspired me to put out some of the natural autumn objects we have fond with some toy animals next week :-)

    1. I have such strong memories of making a nature table at school when I was little, I love them just as much now! Have fun :)

  6. Love the advice to just go outside – it’s so true and we forget just how rewarding the simple things can be, for both adults and children :) #TheFolkPrompt

    1. I think we’ve had some of our best days out when we’ve just set off and let nature be our guide, simple works for us :)

  7. I think you’re so right to say ‘just go outdoors’ as so many people don’t theses days. For me the simple pleasure of running through autumn leaves was an important childhood experience that I wanted to share with my daughter. Autumn is such a lovely season, even if it’s wet it can often still be warm and collecting leaves to craft with is such a fun thing to do :)

    1. I totally agree – it’s so easy to over-complicate doing things with the kids, but when we just go with the flow and see where a trip outside takes us we always enjoy it. It’s less work getting ready too!

  8. Leaf painting was also one of my favourite activities when I was a kid. In fact, it’s the one thing that comes to my mind when autumn comes along. Have a nice weekend Catherine!
