Welcome to a new book giveaway!
I’ve got two copies of gardening expert Charles Dowding’s new book, ‘No Dig Gardening’, to give away. Whether you’ve only just started growing your own, or are a seasoned pro, this is a great book to help you improve your crops and garden more sustainably.
What is no dig gardening?
Charles Dowding is famous in the gardening world for pioneering organic gardening, and for being a world authority on no-dig vegetable gardening. No dig gardening involves simply mulching your soil with compost, rather than digging it. There are lots of benefits to this method, including improved soil structure, better drainage, fewer weeds and healthier plants. And because there’s no digging, you save lots of time too!
Let’s take a look at Charles’s new book in more detail.

Charles Dowding’s No Dig Gardening – From Weeds to Vegetables Easily and Quickly
The book is based on the written content of Charles’s successful online course. It takes you through a series of ‘lessons’, which explain the concept of no dig vegetable gardening and the art of making good compost for your garden. Each lesson is comprehensively illustrated with before, during and after photographs from Charles’s own market garden. Lessons finish with a multiple-choice quiz to help you recap the main learnings.

As well as taking you through the no dig method, there are lots of other practical resources too. The book shows you how to plan your vegetable garden layout, how to create and look after beds and paths, and how to make your own compost, and also explains the different types of mulch and how you can use them to clear weeds.

There are also two chapters dedicated to planting plans for small spaces, based on what Charles has grown and showing how no dig helped to achieve these outcomes. This is a great resource for those of us with limited outdoor space, and shows just how productive even a small veggie plot can be.

This really is a brilliantly practical and accessible book. With millions of views of his YouTube videos over lockdown alone, Charles’s no-frills methods resonate with novice and experienced gardeners alike. This is the ideal book for anyone interested in the no dig method, and how to implement it in their own garden or allotment. And if you’re already starting to think about Christmas shopping, it would make a lovely gift for a gardener too. Who would you buy it for?
